Thanksgiving Weekend Takeout in Elmira: A Simple Plan From Friday to Monday
Thanksgiving dinner is one meal. The long weekend is ten or eleven of them. Family arrives Friday night, somebody has to be fed on Saturday at noon, and by Sunday evening nobody in the house wants to wash another roasting pan.
The hosts who enjoy the weekend are the ones who decide in advance which meals they will cook and which they won’t. Here is a simple plan that works for most Elmira households.
Friday night: arrival dinner
People turn up at different times, hungry and tired from the drive. This is the worst night to cook and the best night for a platter. Chicken shawarma, rice, salad, garlic sauce and warm pita sit on the counter and everyone builds a plate when they walk in.
Saturday lunch: something quick
If you are heading to the St. Jacobs market or out for a fall walk in Woolwich, wraps travel well and nobody needs cutlery. Order ahead and pick up on the way.
Sunday or Monday: the big dinner
Cook your turkey and the dishes your family expects. If you have guests who eat halal or vegetarian, a small shawarma or falafel platter on the side means everyone has a full plate without a second main course.
The day after: leftovers and rest
Shawarma reheats well in a pan for a couple of minutes, and leftover rice and salad make an easy lunch bowl.
A few things that help: order platters as early as you can, tell us your headcount rather than guessing quantities, and ask for sauces packed separately if the food will sit for a while.
